The golem is an invincible creature from European mythology, particularly Jewish Kabbalah. It eventually escaped its creator and spread terror. The only way to stop it was to erase the first letter of the inscription on its forehead (Emeth in Hebrew = truth), which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The golem had grown too tall, and the rabbi could no longer reach its forehead. He asked it to tie its shoelaces, and when it bent down, he erased the aleph from its forehead, and the golem reverted to a mere pile of clay.
