For elephants, the gestation period varies from 18 to 22 months and a female can only give birth to one baby at a time, however the latter weighs around a hundred kilos! The baby elephant quickly becomes independent and learns to follow its mother quickly. To feed itself, it suckles, with its mouth and not its trunk, until it is two years old, however it is from its three months that it begins to eat plants! If the females spend their life within their original family, the males leave the group at the age of 10.
