Description
The African elephant is today the largest land animal, it can measure up to 4m high for a weight of around 7 tonnes. He lives mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also in the north of South Africa. This mammal is easily recognizable thanks to its long ivory tusks, which alone can weigh up to 100kg, and its proboscis which it uses for food. Unlike its cousin, the Asian elephant, it has larger ears, less hair and a more rounded back.
The species is now in decline due to poaching but also to the progressive destruction of its habitat.
