Description

This set includes three garden insects: an ant, a ladybug, and a swallowtail butterfly. A great gift idea to introduce our children to insects.

- Ladybugs are insects of the Coleoptera family, recognizable by the red color of their elytra. This color, which is also a natural means of defense, is the origin of their name, which comes from the Latin coccinus, meaning "scarlet." Contrary to popular belief, the spots on their wings do not indicate their age but rather represent a key to identifying the species. Ladybugs are now highly prized by gardeners in their fight against aphids.

- The black garden ant is a cosmopolitan species of ant, belonging to the Formicinae subfamily. This widespread, opportunistic Palearctic species is common in Europe. The workers are black with gray highlights and measure 3 to 5 mm, while the queen can measure up to 11 mm (usually 9 mm). Like all ants, it undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa (enclosed in a cocoon), and adult.

- The Swallowtail or Giant Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a species of lepidopteran in the Papilionidae family. This large butterfly is particularly well-known to the general public in Europe, where it is common.
The eggs are laid singly on the leaves of a food plant (umbelliferae).
The swallowtail caterpillar is diurnal; it is visible from May to July and again from August to October. Throughout this larval stage, the swallowtail grows by feeding on its host plant and undergoes several molts. The chrysalis is surrounded by a silk belt and attached at the base by the cremaster. Depending on the season, the pupal stage lasts three weeks or all winter. Adults can be observed from March to September.
